National protests following George Floyd’s death have found traction in Kitsap County as residents have taken up the call for change.
The weekend saw a number of rallies from Bainbridge Island to Port Orchard that were mostly attributed to teen organizations, according to the Kitsap Sun. The protests were largely without incident, with just one reported - a restaurant owner who held a taser outside his business.
“Police brutality is an epidemic in our country,” Madison Grant told the Kitsap Sun. “We can’t have it anymore.”
Grant was one of the organizers of the Silverdale protest and recently formed Kitsap Youth Action Team. She referred to Floyd’s death as “the straw that broke the camel’s back” for African Americans, the Kitsap Sun reported.
The sheriff’s office provided traffic control in the Silverdale march, which included the popular chants “No more silence” and “I can’t breathe.”
In addition to Kitsap, there were protests on Bainbridge Island, Port Orchard and Evergreen-Rotary Park in Bremerton, the Kitsap Sun reported.
